6 Must-Watch Career Videos (Including an Exclusive!) from Big Think

Ed Norton

All advice is not created equal.

Mom reminds you not to use “like” in your job interview. (Like, thanks Mom.) Your uncle tells you to go to law school. Your friends are as confused as you are. So who do you really trust to deliver the real insights, the kind of advice that changes your life?

To find the answer, we surveyed educated online users about who they trust most when it comes to business insights. The number one answer? Industry leaders. Makes sense, right? If you want insights on business, you ask business leaders. If you want career insights, you talk to successful people (no offense, Mom), the kind of people who are shaping the organizations where you want to build a career.

For the Brazen Careerists of the world, we’ve rounded up six of our most actionable and inspiring career videos.

1. Tal Ben-Shahar: Write It Down

The psychologist of happiness outlines one simple thing you can do to realize your dreams.

2. Porochista Khakpour: Ditch the Script

Khakpour, the Iranian-American author and writer, gives young writers a piece of advice you can’t ignore.

3. Edward Norton: Feel the Terror

He’s an actor, yes, but did you know he’s a social entrepreneur? Norton co-founded Crowdrise, an online platform for fundraising. Here he talks about what it’s like to do something new.

4. Simon Sinek: Find Fulfillment

Sinek, the management consultant with the hipster look, explains how to find the passion that will make your work worthwhile.

5. Jason Fried: Work at Work

In one of Big Think’s most popular video segments ever, Fried, the entrepreneur who co-founded 37signals, talks about why an office is not the right place to get your work done.

→6. Brazen Careerist Exclusive*: Ken Mehlman, former Republican National Committee chairman

Mehlman, the environmental lawyer-turned-political-leader has one question for you: What do you like to do on Saturdays?

That video from Ed Norton was awesome. Everyone – except the truly arrogant, I guess – doubts their abilities, ideas, or even knowledge when starting a new product or business. I think if you lose that fear, that terror as he calls it, you’ve lost your critical thinking ability. You should have doubt, you should be critical of yourself, you should put your ideas through the ringer. As long as you’re aware of and at peace with the resulting apprehension, you can keep churning out those solid ideas.

I didn’t have a chance to watch all of these yet, but I’ll be back later. I jumped to #5 and it’s SO AWESOME I almost choked on my coffee. I couldn’t agree more.

Jason Fried video had me cheering inside. If I see one more sticky note phone message that says “Joe Schmoe called. Let’s talk” – I might go completely bananas.

I agree. It’s really true. I get nothing done at the office. Most of my productivity is done before work in the mornings.

These are all great! As someone who would love to be an author some day I found Porochista Khakpour’s advice very inspiring – and true!

I was just about to delete my subscription to this newsletter. Then I watched these videos. I have to say Simon Sinek and Jason Fried left me with some strong take-aways. I was nodding my head and agreeing to everything they mentioned. Thank you!
