A Must-Watch Commencement Speech: Author Neil Gaiman on Creating Art

Neil Gaiman

We all love inspiring commencement speeches, even if we’re years out of college.

Who could forget that famous speech Steve Jobs gave at Stanford? Or J.K. Rowling’s Harvard speech?

Here’s another to add to your list: author Neil Gaiman’s speech this year at the University of the Arts.

We heard about this from Tim Ferris, who called it “mandatory listening for anyone who hopes to be creatively successful.”

Our favorite line? “I didn’t have a career,” Gaiman said. “I just did the next thing on the list.”

Watch for some serious inspiration, and then tell us in the comments: What’s your favorite commencement speech?

I feel like I hear this line often from amazing commencement speakers (i.e. very successful people): “I, myself, never went to college…”. It’s sort of disheartening when you’re sitting in the audience knowing you just dropped tens of thousands of dollars are something that apparently is not a necessary ingredient to being successful. =)

Along with humor and engaging audiences, it’s a challenge to offer a diverse audience a message that will resonate and leave them with gifts for their journey ahead. Here’s an example of a storied approach to this challenge. A collage of stories is used to offer students three gifts for their journey (judgment, compassion, and mercy). http://www.vimeo.com/24981140

Some great stuff about being creative – and life in general. One great quote: “Be wise. And if you cannot be wise, then just pretend to be someone who is wise – and act like they would.”
