How Mastering Advanced Social Media Search Will Change Your Life

Fast and efficient social media networking is about finding what you want quickly: potential new jobs, future employees, business competition and perhaps the latest info on a specific someone.

To become a social media sleuth, don’t shy away from using advanced search tools offered by social media giants Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. It’s the best way to dodge irrelevant results and cut straight to the information that matters most — especially for your career.

Advanced Facebook navigation tips

At first glance, Facebook’s latest search tool may not look a whole lot different from its original platform. But with a closer look, you’ll discover more avenues to navigate for targeted Facebook information and fellow users.

Facebook’s graph search has been hailed as a new asset for online journalists because they can cut straight to the photo sources they want or even find potential interviewees. For example, with wider search capabilities, a writer can search for photos taken in August 2013 or recent celebrity photo uploads. If you’re writing a time-sensitive blog post about the Yosemite fires, you can find your image sources by narrowing your search to “photos of Yosemite wildfire.”

Web entrepreneurs can also use Facebook’s graph to search for professionals who work at certain companies or people interested in WordPress development.

This way, you don’t have to search in circles for hours and hope to stumble upon a user who fits your criteria. You can also search for people based on where they used to live or can sleuth around your friends’ lists by searching “friends of friends who…”

Twitter search’s hidden world

Twitter’s advanced search tools are often overlooked because of their quick, easy-as-pie text search. It works more like a basic Google search, which is familiar and comfortable to use. But you’re probably missing out on discovering even more tweets and potential followers relevant to your niche or business goals.

One of Twitter’s most valuable search features is the ability to save your search for later. This is especially useful if you’re a regular Twitter sleuth. It’s all too easy to forget about important searches when you’re not writing things down, so this is an easy-breezy method for taking note of your Twitter search activity.

If you prefer a more syntax-based search tool, you’re a perfect fit for Twitter’s advanced search operators. While they essentially works like Twitter’s standard advanced search tool, users can manually input their own search characters with minus and plus signs, as well as “not,” “near” and other terms.

Harnessing LinkedIn search tools

LinkedIn is one of the top five major social media sites. It’s proven to be a great connection tool for job seekers, up-and-coming startups, new clients and corporate headhunters. And it’s advantageous for any new entrepreneur to learn the ins and outs of LinkedIn search.

Within LinkedIn’s specialized groups, you have access to a polling feature that allows you to view questions relevant to your niche and find the Linkedin users who answered them.

To check out other existing polls within the group, go to the “search” tab and click “all polls” on the left sidebar or sort and filter according to what you’re looking for.

You can also use advanced search to expand your reach to your customers’ clients. By reaching out to those second-degree connections, you have the potential to generate more interest in your business, especially when those connections are communicating their enthusiasm to your clientele.

Advanced search provides an opportunity to build stronger win-win business relationships with both present and potential customers. (Click here to tweet this thought.)
