I aced (or shall I say CRUSHED) the interview, did the follow up, walked in like I owned the place, then promptly and utterly FAILED. Oh, I knew the job, I knew the program, what I didn’t have was knowledge PLUS SPEED. Meaning, I was smart enough, and good enough, for the position. However, I was too damned slow for the job.
Let that be a lesson for you–know the type of position you’re BSing your way through. It was, however, one of the best paid mistakes of my life…too bad I couldn’t keep the job.

BSME (Bachelors in mechanical Engineering)
5 years experience in working with ultrahigh pressure hydraulics
5 years as a design engineer in a manufacturing environment
These are the basic requirements. If you don’t meet one of them, your application is filed. How does cutting through the BS get you the job when you don’t meet the basics? How does genuine curiosity win you anything that doesn’t sound like a rejection and doesn’t make you look illiterate and delusional?
To me, at that point, you either give up or you game the system and fail later when you can’t produce what the company is paying you for.

We are most powerful when we approach relationships with a genuine curiosity. Start with people that you already know and be upfront. Ask for advice – most people react well to that. Yes, it’s a longer-term play, which is why most people prefer to send in job applications. But investing in people is worth it http://www.gregfaxon.com/blog/dont-travel-alone

But the fact is, things get listed on job descriptions that are not directly correlated with an actual ability to do the job (esp. in business). Hiring is not a perfect science. That’s why I suggest cutting through the b.s. and actually proving to the company that you understand them and can perform.

If other applicants appear “more qualified”, as in having the requisite education ( a business degree is of little use for a mechanical engineering position), the requisite amount of experience doing a certain function in a certain role, and techincal connections to senior engineering staff, all you’re left with is to game the system. If you don’t have the chops, education and experience, how are you going to deliver, instead of failing? Short answer is, you won’t, unless you’re that i in 100,000 that is a “natural” engineer. Don’t bet the mortgage on that.

As I understand it, I go on linkedin, find someone who works for a company I may want to work for in the future, and develop a close relationship without revealing my selfish motive for many months/years in the hopes that they can get me a job one day. To me, this sounds like playing poker instead of the lottery. Slightly better odds if you know what you are doing, but unlike the lottery first you have to teach yourself poker, and you the casino may never let you cash in your chips. Perhaps you could explain more about how you predict what companies you want to work for that far in advance, and network without seeming to network. I mean this question sincerely not snidely. I have been applying to jobs in higher Ed for a year, (almost all “cold calls” so to speak) and I’ve gotten to the final interview stage many times without being hired.

The idea is definitely NOT to land a job that you can’t deliver on. It is to stand out from other applicants who may be “more qualified” on paper by demonstrating upfront that you CAN deliver and solve their problems. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment

And when you can’t, you get fired for being a fraud.
