I agree with you Megan. Exactly these skype meetings. I really don't appreciate this. A face to face talk is always the number one option. Though today we are so much surrounded by technology. We have to use it anyways.

I have seen all of this as well and I will add a few more. It seems to me that it isn't necessarily the need to work remotely that is as important as the need to make their own schedule. I find many Gen Y workers are befuddled by the 9-5 idea of work, They live on their cell phones and their tablets and often work before 9 and after 5, but they would still love to have the opportunity to train for their upcoming marathon or to pick up their children after school. Many Gen Y folks, and Gen X, for that matter, want to spend some time in the office connecting with their coworkers, yet have the opportunity to make their own schedules (within reason) and have their work stand on it's own. Secondly I would add that many Gen Y workers are drawn by the prospect of giving back. This generation is much more altruistic and truly covets the opportunity to participate in a company that is giving back to the local community, is going green in an effort to help save the environment, and/or is embracing a charity or local organization that they believe in. All of this, coupled with the above, would make for a powerful package indeed.

I couldn't agree with this more! Especially in terms of Telecommuting. Being required to go into a physical location every day seems like such a waste of hours! Of course, it's lovely to spend face-time with your colleagues - and I think that regular meeting with them is extremely valuable - but every day? As the article says - we have email.

I love being able to organize my days the way I see fit. I think most people are more than capable of understanding that projects need to be done on time and deadlines need to be met - we're grown-ups! "It's the way it's always been done" just doesn't seem to be a very compelling reason to do something - and if an employer didn't trust me to do the work I agreed to do, regardless of my physical location - why did they hire me?
