In other words, those who “get” social media and are totally ok with having their every thought, desire and wish exposed to public scrutiny will end up having an easier time getting a job whereas those who prefer to maintain their anonymity will be punished by having a harder time to find a job.
Is it just me or are company’s gaining greater and greater access into our personal lives? What I do outside of the job has absolutely no bearing on my abilities as an employee. Furthermore, this exposure greatly increases the chances for all manner of discriminiation. I happen to be rather pro-equality and have liked many homosexual marriage rights advocacy groups in Facebook. What’s to stop a homophobic employeer from seeing this and basing their decision to refuse to hire me based on that?
So no thanks but I’m going to be that egg. I’m not giving up on my principals for the hope of a job. I’m not whoring myself out. Either hire me on the basis of my skills and experience or don’t but don’t for a single second assume that I’m going to expose my personal, private life to some company. They provide next to no transparency in their buisness dealings, why should we give it to them?

For those who didn’t get the joke…”an egg” is what you see on Twitter if you do not associate a photo or image of yourself to your Twitter name/account. “Don’t Be An Egg” means it doesn’t make sense to hide yourself when you really need to be present.

Very valuable information here for job seekers, especially #2. Indeed the job search will become more social, it is best new and recent grads take control of their online image. Sites like NetClarify.com let users see what employers and schools see when the applicant is searched online (including social media). It is never too early to take matters into your own hands whether you are applying for a job tomorrow or next year! Great article.
