One widespread deliberation people fail to take into description is the meaning of steadiness within this cycle. Moving the affiliation frontward with a busy/imperative person that receives a ton of consideration can be demanding.
Great stuff here Alexis.

I love this practice. The art of turning a digital acquaintance to a trusted professional colleague then ideally friend is definitely an art-form.

One common consideration people fail to take into account is the importance of consistency within this cycle. Moving the relationship forward with a busy/important person that receives a ton of attention can be challenging. They're already stretched for time so the last thing you want to do is potentially encroach upon it by asking for 30 minutes of their time - especially if they don't perceive that you'll be adding value to their life.

I've found consistently leading with value at a regular interval is the best way to make this person open to a deeper commitment like a phone call or coffee meeting. If you keep appearing in a positive light the hope is that you'll engender a "hey, who is this person" reaction. Doing it once or twice is nice, but that often doesn't warrant someone giving you their time. Many people do this and expect interactions to proceed like this. It just doesn't work like that with A players.

Once I've targeted someone I'd like to build a relationship with digitally, I'll schedule finding a way to add value to them online every 2-3 weeks to cultivate the relationship to the point where the escalation to a deeper interaction becomes more of a "about time we got together" instead of an explicit ask for their time.

Keep up the great work!

We talk to all of our students at Westwood College about the importance of networking from the beginning of their degree program, through the job seeking process and beyond. Many of our students have become strong networkers online but it is a constant struggle and learning curve for how to translate a tweet or LinkedIn connection to something more tangible and longer lasting. You offer helpful insight and recommendations in this post and we look forward to talking to our students more about online AND offline networking in the future.
