Annoying. The hiring manager went with his gut, which he acknowledges in the first section. The second and third section contradict that by making it seem like he dissected each application. There's nothing wrong with the way he selected the applicant, but the criticism isn't helpful because he's not honest. If he was he would've said "you didn't get it because you weren't this guy, sorry"

Dana, I agree that it is the motivation that made the advice seem insulting, but isn't it insulting to the potential employer that the applicants expect to be considered for a job but cannot even be bothered to respond in requested format with requested materials? Or to proofread the application? I've been on both sides of this equation and it takes a lot of time to process the applicants. This guy was being nice for reading all of the applications and even provided good feedback. Most people will toss bad applications and for a typical job posting there are probably more applicants that don't follow the requested format than those who do, which is really sad.

A personalized response?! He got 900+ applications and he obviously has a full time job on top of reviewing them! Spending time to personalize a critique for each one would leave him out of a job. Main point of most of his comments is how not to waste the time of person doing the hiring (with incomplete applications, self-depreciating comments and typos). This is because going through these many applications is daunting. I teach college in addition to my full time job and giving personalized critique to my 22 students is overwhelming, let alone 900 people. Honestly, this guy is NOT a jerk - he read all 900 applications, even if the format was incorrect, even if they had typos - many people will junk these types of applications without reading them and are right to do it. Bottom line, he was being very helpful, more than was required of him.

From these excerpts, the email seems helpful, but also has the air of a hiring manager fed up with bad applications and ready to vent about it. When that is the motivation for offering advice, the advice tends to come off more insulting than genuinely helpful.

This is a great contribution.

As long as it is constructive criticism that one receives as to why they have not been hired, it can be very helpful. Otherwise, it can be very distructive.

You don't think it feels over generalized? It is definitely interesting to read his impressions -- see what stuck out and what did not etc. But it's not like each applicant got a personalized critique. Some of them might not even be aware his advice applies to them!

I think offering feedback to those who are not hired is a good idea. The advise given is in many respects the same that I would say to any of the students that show up in our Career Service to have their applications and resumes reviewed, and what we by experience have come to know is according to many employers views.

(If the quotation marks refers to the single word that is actually in quotes, I do believe the punctuation mark should stay outside the quotation marks.)

I think it's great. To take the time to give feedback is quite rare--most people get very little feedback. If someone takes the time to critique you, it says one of two things: they care about you, or they feel a need to be critical. Take all of the former you can get.
