I tried doing Toastmasters for a year, and I found it was "the blind leading the blind". If you are a moderately good speaker, then getting feedback from people who aren't good speakers, while it can be reaffirming, is also not very useful for improving.

One thing Toastmasters is great for is the frequency with which it lets you speak. When I was in Toastmasters, I tried some public speaking experiments...

For instance, a few times, before I gave a speech, I imagined a great speaker talking (or watched YouTube videos of them) before giving my speech. Then when I went up to speak, I almost pretended I /was/ them. Maybe a little weird, but I found it reduced nervousness and gave me some good speaking qualities I may not otherwise have had.

I wrote about this here: http://thebucketlistsociety.com/2011/12/22/five-public-speaking-tips/

There's some other tips there too. Just my take on things-- hopefully it's useful :)

One of the best ways to work through the public speaking fear is by joining Toastmasters.
