I’d say you are a candidate for mid-level jobs when you meet the experience requirement for mid-level jobs. If you have 2-3 years experience and vacancy announcements state 5-10 years, no matter how ready you think you are, the HR manager won’t agree.
Or be like me. I’m getting to the point where I’ve put the time in to be eligible for mid-level positions in horticulture, but they all require the degree that I don’t have…in that field.

And you definitely don’t need someone else to tell you that you can apply.

But I think Alanna’s point stands — you don’t need to wait for someone else to tell you to be ready.

You can do what I did. Get promoted, mostly just based on seniority, eventually get put in charge of something without any coaching or training, perform poorly, then realize you really weren’t cut out for the position in the first place, accept a demotion, and spend your career trying NOT to be put in the same situation again.
The business world does not seem to understand people who don’t want to move up.

Alanna, I have to disagree! As a person who believes they can do anything, I always believe I am ready. I find myself dissapointed when I don’t get an interview. Instead concrete goals became the most important aspect for my development. When I can do X I will apply for Y, even if I don’t “feel” ready or inspite of feeling “ready” before learning that skill.

True, I could have phrased that better. How’s this? “Self confidence is not a magic wand, but you’re not likely to move up without it.” It’s not the only thing you need but you do need it.

I’m comfused. You started by saying that self confidence is not a magic wand and then end with when you feel ready.

I so agree! You can’t get what you want unless you asked for it. I had only been in an associate position at a previous company for a year when my supervisor left. I let HR know I wanted to take on more responsibility in her absence and before I knew it, I was offered the job!
