I think you have the right idea but realistically people come back to companies more often than you might think. At my firm, we actually have an additional bonus if you bring someone back in that used to work for the firm.

I'm not saying you quit a job to extort the company where you work, but things change. I wouldn't consider that lingering. That being said, I've seen this a number of times but haven't yet doubled back myself but good to know I could if I got in a bind.

if "it doesn't work out", find another job!
You quit for reasons that made sense to you, unless you have reasonable expectations that things are going to change for the better long term. Not only will the employer wonder when you will quit again, they'll probably be planning on reducing your impact of quitting, like limiting your authority, changing your assignments and responsibilities, and reducing your input. DON'T DO IT!! If you quit, just GO! Don't linger like a bad cold!!

Thanks, Lirim. The office pool is my favorite but this is close. Coasting at the end is the last thing you should do if you want to keep that door open. Why would I want to bring a person back/ever work with a person again if they were obnoxious or lazy once they gave notice? Unfortunately, many don't think that far ahead.
