You linked to an opinion piece that Google does not look at GPAs, but did not read the actual interview with Google the piece linked to. This is what Mr. Bock actually said.

“One of the things we’ve seen from all our data crunching is that G.P.A.’s are worthless as a criteria for hiring, and test scores are worthless — no correlation at all except for brand-new college grads, where there’s a slight correlation. Google famously used to ask everyone for a transcript and G.P.A.’s and test scores, but we don’t anymore, unless you’re just a few years out of school.”

Except brand-new college grads. Unless you’re a few years out of school.

Google has only abandoned GPAs for experienced professionals, which makes sense. But there are decades of research that show that GPA matters and that’s why Google hasn’t abandoned it for this group. After-all, what is a better predictor of success, 1-3 interviews in a forced setting, or the track record you accumulated the last four years?

If you have 3 years or less of work experience, your GPA is extremely important to the success of your job search, whether it be Google or not, and also how much you can earn. It may not be fair or right, but factual and I am concerned when young professionals are told otherwise.

I’ve worked for the big G for 2 1/2 years (as a consultant). I was told I can’t be hired on as a full time employee because I don’t have a top tier college degree with an MBA. They may not care about grades (although you have to supply every transcript from every school you have ever attended), but they do care about pedigree. Never mind the fact that I actually train people that do have the pedigree.. or that I mentor a full time employee.. I don’t have the paper so I’m not worthy. I know of many people that have been here for years (8+) and they are in the same boat.
