Lovin this, Annie. I’m SO pleased you didn’t mention ‘finding your passion’. If I hear that advice one more time ….

It’s not the answer! Sometimes a career means more than simply loving what you do. Anyone who wants to make a transition is likely to feel some fear. Running towards ‘you passion’, or the comfort zone, definitely isn’t going to conquer the fear.

Here’s another tip: make sure that you can at least perform at an adequate level in your new career.

It does your career no favors if you get let go in 3 months because you couldn’t do the job.

I’ve been meaning to read Cal Newport’s book, and I appreciated the quote that you shared from it. (More incentive to read the book!)

“Research shows that the traits that lead people to love their work are
general, and can be found in many different career paths. They include
things like autonomy, a sense of impact and mastery, creativity, and
respect and recognition for your abilities.”

Recognizing this is a really helpful mindset to have.

I’m really glad you mentioned fear. Of course, we need to recognize our fears, and we also need to challenge them. I heard Jillian Michaels speak last weekend, and she had several great examples how what we’re often afraid of is already our reality. “I’m afraid I won’t get the job.” Well, you already DON’T have the job, so there’s nowhere to go but up. I think it’s a great way to reframe and keep yourself from letting fear keep you in the status quo.

Thanks for the post. I think the most important is to be open to different careers. Like you said the things people desire in a job are things like creativity and autonomy and multiple jobs have that. Recognizing that allows you to be more open to the possibilites.
