Turning a Passion for Classic Video Games Into a Career (Podcast)
Note from the editor:
We’re excited to bring another great podcast to our Brazen readers!
Once a month, we’ll partner with Rob Farquhar to bring you his Paid to Play Podcast. Each episode is a chat with someone who defies the myth that you have to starve or be a superstar to do the work you love. Host Rob Farquhar asks everyone from musicians to novelists, game designers to backyard tinkerers, the questions you need to know so you, too, can turn your interests into income.
Today is the first installment, so we’ll turn it over to Rob!
Trevor Longino is an enthusiast of computer and video games who has been playing since he was seven. He’s worked for one of the big players in the gaming scene, Electronic Arts (or EA, as they’re known nowadays) and is currently the marketing and publications manager for GOG.com, a company that brings games from the MS-DOS and early Windows eras of PC gaming to modern audiences. He leads a team of fellow marketers, sets GOG.com’s marketing priorities, fosters the community on GOG.com boards and also gets a little rockstar by voicing “This Week on GOG” videos.
While his job isn’t one of gaming’s glamor jobs—he’s not a coder, a level designer, a sound or visual artist or a producer—he works with fellow gaming enthusiasts doing creative, challenging, playful work that he loves and is passionate about. His job is to get the word about GOG’s efforts out to old-time gamers so they can once again revisit the worlds they loved so much, and also to introduce younger gamers to the classics.
Highlights in this episode:
- Trevor’s history both as a gamer and in the industry
- Just what marketing involves in the social media age
- What it takes to to get a job in the video game industry
- How to find passion and creativity even in “non-rockstar” jobs
