How Optimizing Your Online Dating Profile Can Help With Your Job Search

So there’s this awesome job, the sort of job you’d just die to land (and tell your friends about)! But the awesome job isn’t nearly like the job you have now. So how do you make it from current job to awesome job?

In our podcast series, we’re hoping to provide insights and answers to that very question. We talk to young people who have amazing jobs or are doing something really cool and interesting and ask them how they did it. So listen along for good information and some inspiration, too.

This certainly isn’t the first time someone has pointed out the similarities between dating and the job hunt. But the comparison is just so apt!

So when I learned about A Little Nudge, Erika Ettin’s online dating business, I knew her experience helping people find love would give her an interesting take on job search and personal branding topics. Apart from that, I was also really interested in learning more about Erika’s business and how she left a career in finance to become “part dating coach, part matchmaker,” as her website puts it.

In the interview, Erika talks about that journey and explains how she makes a living as an online dating consultant. But the best part might be her dating tips. This girl really knows her way around an online dating profile!

Interesting concept. But for those of us who are either married or in exclusive monogamous relationships, online dating of any sort is fraught with all sorts of ethical, moral, relational and physical perils that it may not be worth it.

As I mention in every comparison between dating and job searching, I agree wholeheartedly. I always hated both. And in both cases, a less than perfect current relationship is greatly preferred to playing the game.

      Thanks co-editor!!

I can just see someone attempting to explain it to a spouse or partner: “Oh I’m just optimizing my online dating profile on Match.Com to facilitate my job search.” I’ll call and have the ambulance standing by.

Haha, point taken, Jrandom42. But I don’t think Erika was trying to encourage people to try online dating if they’re in committed relationships already!

So, does that mean these tips for job search don’t apply if you’re married or in a committed monogamous relationship?

        Then, thanks for nothing!

Good Interview. I shared it with some of my contacts that are on online dating sites and got some good feedback. I have a friend who is a marketing consultant and he received great results on dating sites because he applied his knowledge of search marketing to online dating. First online dating consultant that I’ve heard in an interview. Well done Erika. It makes sense that a consultant like this is needed.

Thank you, John! You hit the nail on the head. We have people review our resumes all the time, so why not our online dating profiles? Erika
